Murphy, '04 - 53" ML 6.5" Dor. Dip. Brilliant red Unusual Form with tremendous branching, cream edge

I haven't seen a registered daylily like this one. It is cherry red with a darker red eye, chartreuse throat, and green heart. The unusual part of the is flower is that it the petals have a creamy tan ruffled edge, and the sepals have a yellow ruffled edge. These edges change to wider cream edges on very hot days. The flower is completely sunfast. The bloom season is extremely long due to 3 branches, 22 buds and instant rebloom. The scapes are very strong, and stood after the hurricane this year. The ruffled light edge came from the pod parent, and the fine red color from the dad. This edge is passed down as a dominant trait in the offspring.

Murphy 08 8" EM 50" Semi-evergreen Tetraploid
A purple bitone with chartreuse throat and black veins, this large near spider is extended, and sunfast on all but the very hottest few days of summer. Looks great in the evening, unlike many narrow dark tets. Fertile, but pod difficult. It is out of LAVENDER ARROWHEAD by PURPLE PEOPLE EATER.

Murphy, '06 - 40" Mla 7" dor.dip. Extremely clear lavender, striking purple eye, lemon lime throat

This was definitely the most watched of the summer intros this year. There is a clear color to this flower that calls from way, way, across the garden. It is a hard color to capture on film or digitally. Very clear lavender with some blue or grey in it, a striking purple eye, and lemon-lime throat. It has deep 3 and 4 way branching with very well spaced blooms, perfect for shows. It opens fully by early morning, and has a cream edge on hot days.  4 way branching, 26 buds. Fertile both ways.

Margo and I feel that this one is worthy of garden awards and growing in every garden.

Lavender with purple eye and cream edge above chartreuse throat.

Murphy, '07 - 46" Mre 9" ev.dip.UF - crispate. Radical twirled squash-blossom gold, green throat

OCTOPUS TANGLES attracted attention on its first bloom, when 10 people were clustered around it exclaiming WOW! at its radical 14" bloom. The extreme quilled crispate blooms are a flashy gold, creped, folded, and twirled. Very green throat, and a small cream edge. Tall, with only one branch, and low teens bud count, but has reliable instant rebloom here. The huge blooms will mean a quick sell out! Midseason and EMO will equal a great show flower. Evergreen, out of two hardy parents, GREEN DRAGON by JANS TWISTER. Fertile both ways.

Murphy, '07 - 38" Vla 6" dor.dip. Very Fragrant, creped lemon with cream edge, sunfast. Another in my series of very lates. This one will bloom in most gardens in September and October when few daylilies will. Opens well in cold weather.

OLFACTORY EVIDENCE may not be the best name, but it aptly describes this flower. All the good names about smell were obviously taken! The name also pays tribute to the well named "Evidence" flowers of Richard Norris. This very late lemon flower has a creped texture and a cream edge on hot days. There are very few daylilies that bloom this late, and the lemon color and crisp scent really attract people. Completely sunfast, with two branches, and 20 buds, and extended bloom. Fertile both ways with fragrant kids.

Murphy, '06 - 54" M 7" dor. Dip. Spider. Red lavender, good branching and bud count, long bloom. Has a purple band and very long bloom season. Easily fertile.

This very tall dormant lavender has nearly phenomenal branching and budcount once established, the best reason for its introduction. The scapes have well spaced branching, with long, narrow blooms with a ratio of 4.8 to 1. The color of the petals is not completely clear, but is set off well with the contrasting purple band and yellow throat, with a touch of green at the heart. Blooms a very, very long time, standing well above the other daylilies. I have recorded an 8 week bloom season on an established plant. 4 way branching, 35 buds. Fertile both ways.

(Murphy 09) 37" Ere 7" Sev Dip Spider

I am happy to introduce you to this great flower with a deep, wide green throat. Clear, light pink, with a rose band and that striking green throat. It is a 4:1 spider, with 2 branches and 16 buds under poor conditions, and more with good conditions. It is sunfast here, and fertile. It is out of MAD MAX by DESERT ICICLE, and should do well in a wide climactic range. Large single or small double fans.

(Murphy 09) 40" M 8.5" Sev Dip ext Cascade Unusual Form

"Striking" well describes this huge cream flower with chartreuse throat and yellow midrib. The first bloom ever on this plant was so big I couldnt believe it. It has the habit of putting out extreme first blooms on every scape, and calming down to a tiny 8.5" on last blooms. It is a low percentage polytepal, so expect some surprises. As with some huge flowers, this one has a minimal 2 branches and 12 buds in poor conditions. It can have much more with excellent care. Fragrant, extremely fertile, and an excellent parent for huge cascades. Out of a Benzinger seedling (Bmlwhuf), by LUNA. Sunfast. Single Fans.

Murphy 08 7.5" ML 40" Dormant Diploid
This light pink cascade Unusual Form with stippled rose edge is my first introduction of perhaps many from MARGO REED INDEED by NORTH WIND DANCER. It is long blooming, extended, fragrant, and has 3 branches, with 15 or more buds. It is absolutely beautiful, both in the morning and on the hottest day until after dark. I am only selling 7 plants this August, and the price is $150 for very large single or more likely, double fans. Fertile, but pods are not easy.

It is out of MAD MAX by a Jack Carpenter Seedling. Long blooming and sunfast , fertile.

Murphy, '07 - 43" Ere 6" dor.dip. Narrow tan, sharply contrasting burgundy eye, 4-way branching.

PEACE OUT was a surprise from an unusual cross of EASY NED by HELGA BJORNERUD BURKEY. Most seedlings from that cross had muddy color, but this one stands out with golden tan blooms with sharply contrasting burgundy eye and a chartreuse throat. Early, with very sunfast blooms, ample 4 way branching, and a high bud count. Very long bloom season, and some rebloom here. Fertile both ways. Very narrow, but just misses the spider ratio at 3.92:1.

Murphy, '06 - 56" La 5" semievergreen dip. UF cascade, lavender purple with large pale lemon-cream face. Quite tall.

This is the most unusual of my intros for this summer. Starts blooming late, after many have finished blooming. It is a dark reddish lavender first thing in the morning, with a striking lemon cream midrib. As the day progresses, the lavender gets much lighter and clearer, and the throat opens and fades to a striking lemon cream-white, getting larger as the day progresses. It has one completely hardy parent, and it showed no damage during our -10F open winter when it was a baby. 3 way branching, 18 buds. Fertile both ways.

Murphy, '07 - 43" LaRe 8" dor.dip. Sunfast burgundy, gold edge & midrib, instant rebloom, hard dormant. Proof that a diploid UF can have a gold edge.

PROOF was named for just that reason, it is proof that a gold edge can be on a diploid unusual form. This tall, late burgundy is extremely sunfast, and both the gold edge and the gold midrib are more prominent on hot days. Proof both bud builds and has instant rebloom, a rarity in a hard dormant. Fertile both ways. Two branches, 21 buds.

Murphy, 08 - 40" EM 7" sev. Dip. Veined reddish lavender white midrib, cream edge

Finally a nice cultivar from Lola Branham and Skinwalker, a nearly impossible cross! This large lavender to reddish lavender bloom is complicated, with heavy veining, striking white midrib, cream edge, purple band, and chartreuse throat. It can be a UF, or a spider on some blooms, but is not registered as either. Always different, and always good. Fertile, sometimes Ethereal ( hence the name) .

This bloom is wide open on 50F mornings and sunfast at 100F. It starts blooming ML and blooms for over a month until mid to late August here. It has a lemon throat, with green heart, cream edge, and cream midribs. Two Branches, 16 buds, Fragrant. My third intro from MARGO REED INDEED by NORTH WIND DANCER, joining PANAMA PINK and CRUISE CONTROL.  It makes its place in the garden with steady, consistent performance in all weather. Fertile, limited.

Murphy, '05 - 38" Mla 6.5" dor.dip. Outrageous clear lemon, radical UF, green throat. This has proven perfectly hardy in both zones 3 and 9 ( west). One of my favorites because it is always perfect, every day, with excellent budcount and growth. Out of SUNNY SON by SPIDER MIRACLE. Fertile, proliferates, fragrant.

This outrageous clear light yellow to chartreuse flower is a radically shaped crispate unusual form. It is quite variable as well. It has a large grass green throat with very ruffled, lighter edged petals. The sepals are so rolled that you can't see the edge. It has three branches and 17 buds, with instant rebloom, for a long season. It proliferates heavily. It is dormant, and has famous parentage, carrying genes for ruffled edges, red, chartreuse, and yellow, ensuring that it will be in demand by hybridizers.

Murphy, '06 - 49" Vla 7.5" dor.dip. Spider. Yellow pink blend, bitone, lav. Edged sepals Late.

There are not many bitone spiders with yellow-to-pink petals and yellow-to-lavender edged sepals. Actually, this is the only one, to my knowledge. Very late dormant diploid, huge waxy green throat. Tall at 49", very fragrant, and diamond-dusted. Base color is a yellow-pink blend with stippled pink and lavender color on ruffled edges. 4.89:1 spider ratio, fertile both ways. One or two branches, 16 buds, some rebloom.

Murphy, '04 - 46" Mre 7" dor. Tet. Dark velvety red, yellow throat, green heart. Sunfast

My first tet introduction was the best of the keepers from a long cross. It won Best Seedling at the 2001 NCDC Flower show on its maiden bloom. It has dark velvety red, with a yellow throat and a green heart, complemented by a small ruffled blackish red edge. It has 2 or 3 branches, and 16 buds in poor culture, and up to 5 way branching and 32 buds in great culture. It is extremely sunfast, like its mom. It is red in the morning and red at night, hence the name. Very fertile both ways. I am using it to breed with narrower evergreen tets to give hardiness and sunfast color.

Murphy, 07 - 39" MRe 6" dor. Dip. Spider - Cherry red, cream edge

I am very proud to introduce this cultivar. It is cherry red with a tan edge in the morning, and as the day gets hot, the midribs and edge bleach to a striking cream. The bloom remains very sunfast, with a chartreuse throat. I registered it with 2 branches and 12 buds, but this fall, it rebloomed with up to 4 branches and 25 buds. The third image is on a cold day in October. It is related to Candy Cane Dreams, and a sibling to several of my light edged reds. Good grower, fertile.

Murphy, '05 - 44" MLaRe 5.5" dor.dip. Sunfast purple, black watermark, tiny white edge, yellow throat.

Purple blooms with a black watermark, and a tiny white edge, yellow throat, green heart. This completely sunfast purple has TRAHLYTA as a grandparent, and looks different at 6PM than at 7AM. It starts out purple with a black eye, and changes to greyed purple with a black watermark later in the day. Clayton Burkey, and other hybridizers agreed on its selection on 90F+ afternoons. It blooms a long time, with 2 branches, 19 buds, and rebloom. Hard dormant.

Murphy, '05 - 30" Vla 5.5" dor.dip. Greyish brown, purple eye, yellow ribs, fast growing, late &unique.

Greyish Brown petals, and sepals, purplish red eye, yellow midribs, prominent veins on petals, orange and yellow throat. This plant was selected for its unique color pattern, perfect foliage, and fast increase, as well as late bloom. There is nothing like it at mid season, much less very late season. It has slender, yet strong scapes with 17+ buds. The name comes from the color of the petals, as well as a more tongue in cheek meaning. Out of a Benziger seedling by TROPICAL DEPRESSION, it has TRAHLYTA in the background and does color change to some extent.
